Tackle Tips by freefishingtips.blogspot.com

By Vic Carrao
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you noticed every time you walk into a tackle store, your wallet becomes much lighter? You go in thinking you just need a couple lures and line, by the time you hit the cash register you're down $30.00 or more. There are so many lures that catch fish, it's hard to resist adding one more to the tackle box, and fishing line is not cheap either. In my business, if you don't learn how to shop wisely, you'll soon find yourself working just to keep the tackle box full. There are some things you can do that will save some money in the tackle store.

Lures and Hooks
Most species of fish will bite a lure or spinner. Many of my fondest memories come from casting a lure for Coho, Chinook or Steelhead. Most of the lures on the market today come complete in a package with swivel, split ring and hook. The hook is usually made from a harden metal or alloy which is great until you get snagged on a branch or log. Snagging up on the river bottom usually means the loss of that $5.00 lure. For years now I have been changing the hooks on my lures strait out of the package to a softer hook that will straiten on a snag.

Most of you are probably thinking that if the hook will straiten on a snag then it would also straiten on a fish, not true. When a lure gets snagged on a branch or log, the point of the hook is penetrated into the structure; this puts the stress on the point of the hook. When you pull hard, the hook either straitens (if it's soft) or breaks the line (if it's hard). When the hook is penetrated into a fish's mouth, the stress on the hook is not on the point but on the bend of the hook. I have never had a hook straiten when fighting a fish that was hooked cleanly in the mouth.

Changing hooks
I change the hook on my lures to an Eagle Claw or Gamigatsu Si-wash Hook. A Si- wash hook is a hook with an extra long shank and an open eye. The open eye allows you to attach the hook onto a split ring or swivel quickly with very little effort. All you need is a pair of pliers to close the eye once placed on the swivel or split ring. When you purchase your next lure, pickup a pack of Si-wash hooks, make sure you match the size of the hook on the lure to your Si-wash hooks.

Leader and lines
There are many brands of line available on the market today; my favorites are Berkley Trilene for spinning reels and Maxima Ultra Green for levelwinds. The Berkley Trilene offers a larger variety of lines for specific methods and species that is more suitable for the majority of the fishing fraternity. There are many factors that must be taken into account when putting line onto a reel; Berkley has covered them all from Berkley Sensithin for lighter applications through to Berkley Big Game for your larger game fish. Maxima make a great product for your standard levelwind applications with Ultra Green being the most popular. Both these brands are readily available at most tackle stores in your area.

Saving $$$ on line
There are 4 basic spool sizes available, leader spools - 27 yards ($4 to $5), mini packs - 110yds ($9 to $10), one shot - 220 yds ($17 to $22.00) and Bulk line purchased by the yard, 4-8 lb ($4 per hundred yds) 10-15 lb ($ 5 per hundred yds) 17 to 20 lb ($6 per hundred yds). The bulk prices above are available at Hub sports in Abbotsford.

If you take a close look at the differences between purchasing leader spools and bulk line you'll soon realize the large saving if you purchase your line by the yard. Lets take the leader spool at 27 yards for $4 to $5, which works out to approximately $12 to $15 for a hundred yards. Bulk line for 100 yards is between $4 and $6, that is over 50 % saving on just one purchase. When you purchase the larger One- Shot spools for re-spooling your reels you pay between $17.00 and $22.00 for 220 yards, most reels only hold 120 to 175 yards of line. You don't want to use the same diameter for leader as mainline so that extra 45 to 100 yds becomes waste. If you take your reels into the tackle store for re-spooling, you only pay for the line that goes on the reel. That now means on 120 to 175 yards your only paying $6 to $10, saving again over 50%.

How to buy bulk line
Save all your small, medium and large spools, take your large spools down to the nearest tackle store and have them spool the diameter of lines that you most often use for mainline, 15 to 20 lb test is what I use. When your reel is in need of new line, just re-spool your reel with your bulk line. For leaders have them spool the medium size One-Shot spools with leader line, usually 8,10 &12lb test. When your small leader spools that you carry in your vest become empty just re-spool them at home with your bulk leader. You'll save a lot of wasted money that can be applied to that new rod or reel that you've been eyeing up.

HOBBY NO. 13 : MARTIAL ARTS

Hobby on martial arts is important. Its because martial arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for fighting and self defence. Some martial arts are linked to spiritual or religious beliefs/philosophies such as Islam, Buddhism, Daoism or Shinto while others have their own spiritual/non-spiritual code of honour.

The word 'martial' was originated from the name of Mars, the Roman god of war. The term 'Martial Arts' literally means arts of Mars. This term comes from 15th century Europeans who were referring to their own fighting arts that are today known as Historical European martial arts. A practitioner of martial arts is referred to as a martial artist.

Photo : One technique from Silat Penjuritan Kepetangan Melayu. This photo was taken from their blog.

Some of famous martial arts :
1) Judo
2) Taekwondo
3) Aikido
4) Kalari Payat
5) Malaysian Silat
6) Qigong
7) Karate-Do
8) Shoalin Kungfu
9) Wushu
10) Boxing
11) Muay Thai
12) Brazil Capoeira
13) Wing Chun
14) Wresling
15) Indian Silambam
16) Others....

In Malaysia, despite of foreign martial arts such as Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Kalari Payat and others; we also have our own martial arts which originated from Malaysia or others Malay region like Indonesia; called SILAT.

Silat is an umbrella term used to describe the martial art forms practiced throughout the Malay Archipelago. Silat is a combative art of fighting and survival and it has been evolved in Indonesia and Malaysia civilizations for centuries into social culture and tradition. During the colonization era, both in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam as British colonies and in Indonesia as Dutch colonies, practitioners (locally known as pesilat) used the martial art as a form to liberate from foreign authorities.

The distinctive forms of silat with other Asian martial arts, such as kung fu, tae kwon do or karate, lie on the cultural aspect. Silat is not only for combative purposes. When accompanied with traditional instruments, such as kendang, silat transforms into a folk dance. In Minangkabau area (the West Sumatra province of Indonesia), silat was the oldest men's tradition known as silek and it is one of the components to perform the Minangkabau folk dance of randai. In Malaysia, one form of silat known of silat pulut also shows the harmonic silat styles as a dance accompanied by traditional instruments. A silat form in West Java province of Indonesia, known as pencak, is usually accompanied with music, notably by the traditional Sundanese suling instrument.

When I searching for some materials for my material arts issue, I accidentally found this silat penjuritan kepetangan melayu website. To be honest, I never heard about this kind of silat in Malaysia. Names like Silat Gayong, Silat Cekak Hanafi, Silat Cekak, Silat Sendeng, Silat Olahraga even Silat Pulut, I know. But, This Silat not in my vocubulary. From my reading (thru their website and blog), I think their silat is influence by nature. Some of their technique is copyright from seeing bat or chicken behaviors (please correct me if I'm wrong...).

But what I like their philosophy a lot is their effort to educate younger generation to learn this silat. For them, "there 2 main reasons you should feel notable about conducting children class. The first reason is to be able to educate able self defense, to give them a chance to protect themselves or their loving ones in times of need. The alarming increasing rate of crime against children, does make the impression the knowledge pass on will be use rightfully. Secondly the chance to further educate the next generations about our culture and heritage".

Jokes : $64K Question

Bob had finally made it to the last round of the $64,000 Question. The night before the big question, he told the M.C. that he desired a question on American History.

The big night had arrived. Bob made his way on stage in front of the studio and TV audience. He had become the talk of the week. He was the best guest this show had ever seen. The M.C. stepped up to the mic.

"Bob, you have chosen American History as your final question. You know that if you correctly answer this question, you will walk away $64,000 dollars richer. Are you ready?"

Bob nodded with a cocky confidence-the crowd went nuts. He hadn't missed a question all week.

"Bob, your question on American History is a two-part question. As you know, you may answer either part first. As a rule, the second half of the question is always easier. Which part would you like to take a stab at first?"

Bob was now becoming more noticeably nervous. He couldn't believe it, but he was drawing a blank. American History was his easiest subject, but he played it safe.

"I'll try the easier part first."

The M.C. nodded approvingly. "Here we go Bob. I will ask you the second half first, then the first half."

The audience silenced with gross anticipation......

"Bob, here is your question: And in what year did it happen??"

Taman Negara Kuala Tahan, Jerantut (Pahang, Malaysia)

Taman Negara or National Park was established in Malaysia in 1938/1939 as the King George V National Park. It was renamed to Taman Negara after independence, which literally means "national park" in Malay. The total area of Taman Negara is 4,343 km²which encompasses three states, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu.

Photo : Myself with friends at Taman Negara gateway.

The main attraction in Taman Negara :
1) Gunung Tahan (Tahan Mountain)
Gunung Tahan is the highest point of the Peninsular; climbers can use Kuala Tahan (Jerantut, Pahang) or Merapoh (Kuala Lipis, Pahang) as their departure point. Taman Negara is the home of some rare mammals, such as the Indochinese Tiger, Sumatran Rhinoceros, Malayan Gaur (seladang) and Asian Elephant. Tahan River has been preserved to protect the Malaysian mahseer (ikan kelah in Malay), a type of game fish.

2) Sungai Tembeling (Tembeling River)
Sungai Tembeling is the waterway to Taman Negara. Some people will also call this river as Sungai Pahang (Pahang River) or Sungai Tahan (Tahan River). This river is ideal place to fishing especially Ikan Kelah (Malaysian Mahseer). But, you are not allowed to fishing inside Taman Negara area, except you are given special permit by Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

Photo : Myself during boating along Pahang River toward Taman Negara.

3) Canopy Walkway
Canopy walkway in Taman Negara is the most nature and longest hanging bridge in the world. Im not sure the fees to climb the canopy, if im not mistaken the fee is RM5.00 per person. I can guarantee, you will claim again next time. But, please forget to claim this canopy if you are too 'chickening' of height and possibilities of reptiles such as snake in you walkway.

Photo : Myself walking along the longest canopy walkway in Taman Negara

4) Others
You can also visit and have memorable experience while boating at Lata Berkoh (Berkoh Rapids), exploring Gua Telinga (Telinga Cave), enjoy the tropical rain forest and birdwatching or jungle trekking.

Transportation :
1) By road. If you like adventure or too afraid of water, may be you can choose to go there by road, but only using 4X4 vehicle. Some people will say its Ok to go the by normal car, but believe me the road from Jerantut to Kuala Tahan using normal vehicle is terrible as I have the experience last October 2007 (Ignored and forgive me if the related authority already upgraded the road).

2) By river. This is recommended way to Taman Negara if you are real naturist (love nature). You can using normal Tembeling Jetty at Kuala Tembeling (Jerantut, Pahang) or Mutiara Taman Negara Jetty (if you booked a trip with them).

Accomodation :
You can choose to stay in hotels, motels, chalets or you even camping in the camping site provided by Taman Negara authorities. Im not recommended anyplace because im used to stay in my foster family in Kampung Bantal or I just have my one day trip here because im local (even now im working in Selangor).

Reminder / Important!
All visitors to the Taman Negara must get permits from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
